From the back cover:
Åse-Marie Nesse (1934–2001) is among the most significant and popular Norwegian poets of the 20th century. From her debut From the Sea You Have Come (Av hav er du komen, 1970) to The Third Gate (Den tredje porten, 2000), she published 12 poetry collections as well as children’s books, plays, and essay collections, along with a large number of adaptations and translations, primarily from German and Spanish. Her rendering of Goethe’s Faust I and II is regarded as a major work in Norwegian translation literature. Åse-Marie Nesse grew up in the open coastal landscape of Jæren in southwest Norway. Her preferred poetic language was Nynorsk, close to dialect. Thematically, her poetry ranges from intimate, personal experience to a cosmopolitan dialogue with world literature and the mythological worlds of ancient and distant cultures. For her contributions to Norwegian literature and to international understanding, Åse-Marie Nesse was awarded the Norwegian Royal Order of St. Olav and the German Order of Merit.
